VSEGEI develops a 3D geological model of the St. Petersburg underground

FBGU VSEGEI under the government order as assigned by the Federal Agency on Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, carries additional geological study of sheets O-35-VI, O-36-I (South Petersburg area). The terms of reference envisage the compilation of a 3D geological model of the St. Petersburg underground space. Currently, the pilot area of the model, which includes the central part of the city, has been finalized.

The workshop “Presentation of the pilot stage of the project to develop a 3D geological model of the St. Petersburg underground space" was held on October 13 at FGBU VSEGEI. At the workshop, a presentation of the first stage of the work was made for interested specialists of state authorities, institutions and enterprises engaged in the development of the underground space of the city.

The meeting was attended by specialists from the Committee for Natural Resource Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety, GUP Petersburg Metro, the State Research and Design Center of St. Petersburg Master Plan, SPbGKU Center for Information Support of Urban Planning Activities, St. Petersburg University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

Oleg Petrov, VSEGEI Director General, in his opening address, noted the relevance of the new direction of the institute’s activities related to the 3D mapping of urbanized areas. N.B. Filippov, the project leader, presented a database on unified wells in the central part of the city (pilot area), demonstrated constituent elements of the model: geological surfaces (Ostashkov moraine formations, pre-Quaternary formations, basement), geological sections along the given lines, a summary block diagram. The capabilities of the GIS-Integro for visualizing 3D geological data were shown in the supplementary report by V.A. Spiridonov.

The participants of the workshop noted the necessity and practical value of the created 3D geological model of the St. Petersburg underground space.

The workshop recommended sending the materials to the Committee for Natural Resource Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of the St. Petersburg Government to study the possibility of filling and using the model as an interdepartmental project within the digital transformation of the “Ecology and Nature Management” industry.
