Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI)
1987– first after 1923 election of VSEGEI Director, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences A.D. Shcheglov. Election of the first Work Collective Council of VSEGEI.
Hermitage transferred the Map of the USSR made of gemstones for the World Exhibition in Paris and New York to the TsNIGR Museum.
Two-volume “Cretaceous System of the USSR” (edited by M.M. Moskovin, T.N. Bogdanova), the monograph by A.D. Shcheglov “Major Problems of Modern Metallogeny. Issues of Theory and Practice”, “Methodological Guide to the Study and Geological Survey of the Quaternary Deposits” (headed by G.S. Ganeshin) were published.

1988 – the first election of the Academic Council of VSEGEI and the first readings in memory of Academician A.P. Karpinsky with presentations by L.I. Krasny and S.I. Romanovsky. Great work was completed by the publication of the monograph "Geology of the BAM zone" and the Atlas of Geological Maps of the BAM Zone at 1: 3,000,000 – 1: 5,000,000 scales under the direction of L.I. Krasny.

Map of Minerals of the USSR at 1: 5,000,000 scale was published (Editor-in-chief E.A. Kozlovsky, edited by K.B. Ilyin, V.N. Poluektov, V.M. Terentyev, A.D. Shcheglov).
1989 – Ten-volume monograph “Geological Structure of the USSR and Patterns of Minerals Distribution” was completed (Editor-in-chief E.A. Kozlovsky, deputy editors-in-chief A.I. Zhamoida, A.I. Krivtsov, R.I. Sokolov): two books of the final volume of the monograph came out.
Leningrad Cartographic Factory of VSEGEI, an unsurpassed enterprise in the country for the skill of graphic and colour display of geological environments and publication of geological maps, celebrated its 50th anniversary.
1990 – VSEGEI and the USSR Ministry of Geology developed the main provisions of the concept of regional geological study of the country, which, taking into account the socio-economic situation prevailing in the USSR at the turn of the 80s and 90s, outlined the fundamental principles for creating a multifunctional geological and cartographic framework for solving the problems of expansion and strengthening the raw material base of the country and rational mineral management.
Exposition “Map of the USSR from gemstones”, presented by the Hermitage to the TsNIGR Museum in 1987, was opened. At the VDNKh USSR, VSEGEI exhibition “Comprehensive Geological Study of the USSR” was awarded with a Diploma and eleven medals.
1991 – Awarding of the State Prize of the RSFSR to the team led by L.I. Krasny for the monograph “Geology of the Baikal-Amur Mainline Zone” and the Atlas of Geological Maps of the BAM Zone.
Work began on the program “Stratigraphy and Palaeontology of Russia”, which coordinated all activities in the country in this direction, as well as on the problem of geological heritage.
1992 -the Institute was renamed A.P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI). The jubilee XXX session of the Academic Council of the Institute dedicated to the 110th anniversary of GeolCom-VSEGEI was held, accompanied by a large exhibition “Actual Problems of Modern Geology in the Developments of VSEGEI”, which demonstrated the newly published series of maps at 1:5,000,000 scale:

Map shows areas with proven reserves and predicted resources of oil, gas, natural bitumen, coal, oil shale, peat, artesian basins and areas of fissure-vein thermal water development.
A set of maps of the Baltic Sea bottom and adjacent land at 1: 500,000 scale was also demonstrated this year (edited by A.A. Grigyalis, J.A. Gyalumbauskaite, V.M. Litvin, M.A. Repechka, M.A. Spiridonov).
A group of VSEGEI employees actively participated in the ХХIХ IGC Session in Kyoto (Japan).
1993 – the first issue of VSEGEI journal “Regional Geology and Metallogeny” was published (Editor-in-chief A.D. Shcheglov).
1995 –“Petrographic Code. Igneous and Metamorphic Formations” was first published (edited by N.P. Mikhailov).
Work began on the creation of the six-volume monograph “Geology and Mineral Resources of Russia”.
“Instructions for the Compilation and Preparation for Publication of Sheets of the State Geological Map of the Russian Federation at 1:200,000 scale” compiled by VSEGEI was published.
1996 – A group of VSEGEI employees actively participated in the XXX IGC Session in Beijing.
1998 – Review “State Geological Map of the Russian Federation at 1: 1,000,000 scale. History of Compilation, Results and Objectives of the Work” was published (edited by A.D. Shcheglov).
December 20, 1998 the Institute was headed by O.V. Petrov, having passed the competition and approved by the Board of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation as the Director of VSEGEI.
Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation approved “Zoning Scheme of the Russian Federation on a Series of Sheets of the State Geological Map at 1: 1,000,000 Scale of the New Generation (Edition)” proposed by VSEGEI and a plan for compiling the legends to these series (serial legends).
In the 90s, significant changes took place in the organization and production of geological research. In a brief review, it is impossible to dwell in more detail on the painful path travelled by the geological survey over the past 10 years. All this is described in detail in the monograph by V.P. Orlov “Mineral Resources and the Geological Survey of Russia in the Years of Economic Reforms (1991-1999)”. Research institutes, including VSEGEI, were in a difficult situation. But against all odds, VSEGEI remains true to its traditions, its destiny. The Institute’s Directorate, headed since 1998 by O.V. Petrov, does at this time everything possible to maintain the leading role of VSEGEI among the sectoral scientific institutions.
Despite the constant and significant reduction in the allocations to VSEGEI, the results of the institute's work are still impressive. As a result of research, placer manifestation of diamonds was discovered 100 km from St. Petersburg and the prospect of discovering their primary sources was proved. 300 km from the city, the first bentonite clay deposit was discovered in the Leningrad Region; mineral type of gold mineralization in the Karelia-Kola region was discovered and studied; a forecast estimate of the Rai-Iz and Syum-Keu massifs (the Polar Urals) was given for a detailed exploration and evaluation for platinum group metals.
1999 – VSEGEI was entrusted with the preparation of the All-Russian Congress of Geologists and the scientific-practical conference “Geological Survey and Mineral Resources of Russia on the Threshold of the 21st Century” (as part of events dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Mining and Geological Survey of Russia).
St. Petersburg Cartographic Factory of VSEGEI participated in the International Cartographic Congress in Canada, where it received a Diploma for the prepared and published Tectonic Map of Europe at 1:5,000,000 scale.
