Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute
Today, VSEGEI is a science agency employing the best experts including 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 56 Doctors of Science and 169 Candidates of Science. The Institute resolves major scientific and experimental issues in the following scientific areas: developing scientific and methodological fundamentals for State Geological Mapping (third generation State Geological Maps on 1 :200 0000 and 1 :1 000 0000 scales) as the basis for unravelling of mineral deposits’ distribution patterns and establishing guidelines for prospecting works; comprehensive geological mapping of Russia’s surface, water and shelf areas and assessing their environmental safety. Metallogenic studies are entering a new stage in their development integrating space photogeological, geomorphological, paleohydrogeochemical and other methods whose comprehensive application ensures unravelling of mineral deposits’ distribution patterns.
VSEGEI signature feature is the focus of its research on the resolution of crucial experimental issues. About three hundred research fellows of the GeolcomVSEGEI provided a scientific prognosis, discovered and for the first time described over 600 deposits of ore regions and provinces of the Earth.
The Institute’s efficiency is guaranteed by the scientific potential and valuable expertise of GeolcomVSEGEI schools. Three scientific schools renowned both in Russia and abroad can be singled out: regional geology and geological mapping, paleontological and stratigraphical, and metallogenic. The Institute has often initiated the application of breakthrough methods and projects in its research activities. In the recent years, for example, system approach and a concept of geological objects’ organization levels are being developed , ensuring integration of various facets of geosystems; fact-based modeling of the past epochs’ geological environment is carried out, new research methods, e.g. mathematical, space geological, paleogeodynamic, etc. are being applied.
The Institute has a high-capacity laboratory service applying state-of-the-art research methods. VSEGEI today is a happy combination of breakthrough technologies and century-long traditions.
